  Neuromuscular disorders

The Ayurvedic term for all types of joint and neuromuscular disorders is Vatavyadhi. The Vata Doshas are responsible for causing these ailments, and they can be identified as:

  • Sandhigata vata (osteoarthritis)
  • Pakshaghata (paralysis)
  • Avabahuka (frozen shoulder)
  • Slip disc
  • Grudhrasi (sciatica)
  • Lumbar and Cervical spondylitis

Many factors like over-exerting the body after performing excessive exercise or carrying heavy weights can be attributed to the development of such neuromuscular disorders. Old age, accidents, sedentary habits and improper diets can also lead to such bodily conditions. The most common symptoms of these ailments are joint pains, inflammations, crepitus, stiffness and restricted movement of the joints or muscles.
Maitra has an effective remedial therapy, both internal and external, in the form of Panchakarma to combat these ailments. Guduchi, Rasna and Guuggulu formulations can be ingested, while many oil massages are available to externally nourish the sore body parts and return them to health. A specialized diet may also be prescribed, and this treatment can be supplemented by regular performance of Yoga and Pranayam, although under trained guidance.
